Geoternity Laboratories is developing new radiofrequency microelectromechanical (RF MEMS) devices for control of radar arrays through monolithic device fabrication.

Modern radar arrays make use of large numbers of antenna elements to synthesize a beam pattern. These synthesis procedures require an equally large number of time-delay or phase-shifting elements coupled with built-in amplifiers or attenuators to optimize the beam pattern.

RF MEMS can be designed to perform all of these procedures and offer several further advantages over traditional individual elements:

They are cost-effectively manufactured in the thousands per wafer.
They are designed for large-scale control and manipulation from a simple interface by integrating FPGA circuitry.
The complexity of operation is reduced by integrating the critical functionality in physical design.
The physical packaging of these devices improves integrability with large-scale arrays.
The cost of maintenance is reduced through increased reliability and decreased troubleshooting requirements.
